Personal Notes
Joen, originally from England, is a keen fisherman, both salt and freshwater.
Loves boating, canoeing and off-road activities. Born in Victoria, British Columbia,
Maureen's interests include cooking, gardening, amateur radio, computers and
good mystery novels. The outdoors are an integral part of our lifestyle and
we maintain as much of the property as possible in its natural state, with limited
managed garden areas. We have hiked and fished throughout the United Kingdom
and New Zealand, but now concentrate on Vancouver Island.
Carl
was born in Nelson, New Zealand, and is skipper of a 21ft. "Hooked One" with Canadian
Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator certification, trials
bike and ATV explorer, amateur radio enthusiast. Anything outdoors in the Sooke/Jordan River
area, Carl can do it!
We
are all retired volunteer firefighters: Joen with 20 years was Training Officer (retired Fire Chief),
Maureen with 20 years was Driver Training Officer (retired Deputy Fire Chief), and Carl with 12 years was
Fire Chief with the Shirley
Volunteer Fire Department (which Joen and Maureen started in 1987) all with medical first responder and spinal certification.
Community
activities and involvement have also played a very important part of our life
in the region. On 20 January 2002, we were both honoured to be selected
by the District of Sooke and Juan de Fuca Electoral Area in recognition of "outstanding
volunteers for the many years of service contributed to the community".
This was the first annual ceremony of appreciation held in the Sooke region.
